Assistant Curator

Located just steps from Independence Hall in Philadelphia’s historic Old City neighborhood, the Museum of the American Revolution has welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors since opening to the public in April 2017. The Museum is dedicated to uncovering and sharing compelling stories about the diverse people and complex events that sparked America’s ongoing experiment in liberty, equality, and self-government, and has been praised widely for its “refreshingly inclusive,” “captivating,” “magnificent and inspiring” exhibitions and programming.

The successful candidate will be creative and collaborative, energized and inspired by the Museum’s vision and mission and will bring fresh ideas and experience to the team as we plan for the nation’s 250th anniversary and our second decade of operation. Position Description
The Assistant Curator conducts material culture, visual culture, and historical research to support the development of the Museum of the American Revolution’s exhibitions, collections, digital projects, publications, and educational programs. In addition, this position supports collection management and registration, marketing, communications, development, and other Museum activities as required. The Assistant Curator will work under the direction of the Senior Curator and will work closely with the entire Collections and Exhibitions team.

Primary Responsibilities
• Serves as a member of the Museum’s exhibition development team: researches possible loan objects; participates in brainstorming and exhibition development meetings; performs historical research; assists with exhibition installation and deinstallation; assists with loan requests and image identification and requests.
• Assists with research and development of rotations for the Museum’s core exhibition galleries: researches possible loan items, collection objects, and themes; participates in brainstorming and core exhibition development meetings; assists with installation and deinstallation.
• Assists with research and development of digital projects related to the Museum’s collections and exhibitions: identifies images and acquires image use rights; participates in brainstorming and digital project development meetings; performs historical research; writes and revises label and panel text for the digital versions of physical exhibitions; researches and writes about objects in the Museum’s collection for online and social media uses.
• Assists with collections management tasks, as needed: pest management, cleaning and maintenance of exhibitions, photography, object packing and movement, etc.
• Assists with preparing reports and public presentations about the Museum’s collections and exhibitions.
• Assists with preparing materials for grant applications and fundraising related to the Museum’s collection, exhibitions, and digital projects.
• Manages the Museum’s image rights and reproductions program related to the collection.
• Responds to internal and external curatorial inquiries.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements
• Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in American history, public history, museum studies, or related field.

Experience & Skills
• 1 to 3 three years of museum curatorial experience, preferably focusing on early American history.
• Experience with early American historical research – both online and in person – especially with objects and material culture methodology.
• Knowledge of and experience with best practices in museum collections care and object handling.
• Familiarity with exhibition development and research.
• Experience with online exhibition projects.
• Capacity and organizational ability to work in a fast-paced, diverse, multi-tasked environment. Ability to manage multiple work processes and projects simultaneously and the ability to be receptive to changing priorities.
• Advanced computer skills in Microsoft programs and automated collections and registration systems, such as PastPerfect. Generally comfortable with technology.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Maintains confidentiality.

Videographer

Position Description
The Museum of the American Revolution seeks a creative and collaborative individual to produce high-quality video content that deepens and broadens engagement with the Museum. Reporting to the Web Editor, the Videographer will film and edit video content for distribution on a variety of digital channels, including (but not limited to) the Museum’s website, YouTube and Vimeo channels, and organic and paid social media, as well as in-gallery and live-event activations.

Primary Responsibilities
• Shoot high-quality video using the Museum’s camera, lighting, and sound equipment.
• Edit and produce video and create motion graphic content using Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects.
• Contribute to photography production and advanced photo editing.
• Archive media assets and maintain a highly organized storage system.
• Work with the Web Editor to sustainably maintain and build the Museum’s YouTube and Vimeo channels according to best practices.
• Collaborate with the Web Editor and Social Media Manager to shoot, edit, and produce short-form video content for social media audiences.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across the Museum and alongside the Web Editor to gather, script/storyboard, produce, film, and edit video and audio content for a variety of strategic content initiatives.
• Produce necessary captioning and transcriptions for video and audio files to ensure accessibility compliance.
• Support the Museum’s AV Specialist for events and in-gallery media activation as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Skills & Abilities
• At least two years of experience creating video content as a producer, editor, and videographer.
• Strong production and editorial skills.
• Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Experience running small video shoots using lighting, sound, and camera equipment.
• Portfolio demonstrating both short-form and long-form visual storytelling skills, as well as professionalism and ethics.
• Clearly defined and well-articulated production process.
• Experience in the full suite of Adobe Creative Cloud.
• Experience created closed and open video captioning.
• Strong interpersonal skills; professional maturity and flexible disposition.
• Ability to communicate clearly about digital initiatives with non-technical staff.
• Strong attention to detail to ensure consistent production quality and aesthetics across projects.
• Ability to work weekends, early morning or evening hours, or holidays as needed.

Education
• Bachelor’s degree in media arts, broadcast or multimedia journalism, film/television production or related field.
